KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In a Facebook post Wednesday, Great Plains SPCA said they had provided a notice to Jackson County they intend to cease operation and management of the Jackson County Regional Animal Shelter.

The announcement also affects the Great Plains veterinary clinic in Merriam, Kansas, which will close on Feb. 1.

The Great Plains SPCA shelter in Merriam will remain open.

The shelter cited financial concerns as the reason for the closure.

“We have determined it is no longer fiscally prudent for us to continue to run the shelter,” the post said. “As such, we have given our six-month notice to Jackson County. Our principal concern during this transition period will continue to be the health and well-being of the animals and staff through this transition.”
