DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. -- A 42-year-old man died in a head-on crash late Thursday night just south of Lawrence, Kansas. The wreck seriously injured the driver of the other vehicle and started a grass fire at the scene that took several firefighting agencies to control.
Douglas County officials said Eric Hutchinson was headed west on N1000 Road around 10 p.m. when he and an eastbound driver collided. Kristina Hurt, the driver of the eastbound vehicle, was seriously hurt and crews took her by helicopter to KU Medical Center.
The report did not specify what might have caused the crash or which vehicle might have drifted into the oncoming lanes.
There were no other injuries reported.
The crash sparked a grass fire at the scene, and "numerous" local agencies responded to help contain it.
The crash and fire kept N1000 Road closed for about five hours overnight into Friday morning.
