KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person is dead after a house fire in Lee's Summit, Missouri, late Thursday night.

Firefighters said they responded to an automatic alarm that sounded in the 1500 block of Southwest 6th Street just after 11:20.

When they got to the scene, they saw smoke coming from the one-story house, at which point they upgraded the call to a structure fire to bring out more equipment and firefighters.

The crews entered the house and found it was filled with heavy smoke.

As they were going inside, another person who lived at the home arrived and told firefighters somebody was probably in the living room.

Firefighters found the victim dead in the living room and extinguished a small fire.

They searched the rest of the home and confirmed no one else was inside.

The fire was under control shortly before midnight. It caused the most damage in the living room, but smoke and heat damage was found throughout the home.

The Lee's Summit Police Department and Missouri State Fire Marshal are helping the fire department investigate what caused the fire.
