KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Arctic blasts like the one Kansas City is in for create prime conditions for frozen and broken pipes inside your home.

KC Water Preventative Maintenance Manager James Binkley said damage from frozen pipes can cost thousands of dollars.

"What can happen is pipes can break upstairs and run all through your dry wall, your carpet, electronics, electrical outlets, so you want to make sure you eliminate those frozen pipes," Binkly said.

There are a few steps you can take to protect your pipes from the extreme cold.

"Make sure you have insulation on your pipes and make sure your garage door is closed," Binkley said. "You can also add heat tape along through here as well too to keep the pipes warm to avoid the freeze burst."

Here are a few other tips to protect your pipes:

  • Detatch and drain outside hoses
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes
  • Allow a small stream of water to flow in your kitchen and bathroom sinks overnight

It's also advised for homeowners to know where their shut-off valve is. It's usually located in the basement or a water utility closet.

If you notice a broken pipe, immediately turn your shut-off valve to halt the flow of water. If you don't know where it is, you can call 311.
