A number of tornadoes touched down in Missouri and Kansas on Monday. Many families were unprepared, prompting some to consider creating an emergency preparedness kit.
The kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency including radios, flashlights and food. Experts say assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency because you may have to leave at a moment’s notice.
You may also need to survive on your own after an emergency, which means having your own food and water to last for at least 72 hours.
George Holt helps people prepare for the unexpected at Riverside Survival Supply.
"We have a year worth of food, a month worth of food. We have water, everything from backpacks of water to water filtration systems," said Holt.
David Gervino with FEMA Region 7 encourages families to create an emergency preparedness kit and a plan of action.
"Have a plan in place so that everyone in the family whether you're together or not; everyone's got a plan in place to take action." said Gervino.
Your kit should also contain personal items to help you manage during power outages.
