KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A piece of clothing found in a field in rural southwest Bates County on Tuesday led to the discovery of human remains, the sheriff’s office said.
Around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies were notified about the article of clothing, which had been found in a bean field, and possible human remains there.
Authorities went to the area and confirmed the human remains. Detectives and forensic anthropologists then spent several hours recovering the remains, which were sent to the Bates County coroner for an autopsy.
Identification of the remains could take a couple of weeks, the sheriff’s office said on Wednesday.
No other information was released, including the person's gender or their manner of death.
The investigation is ongoing, though the sheriff’s office does not expect to release additional updates until the remains are identified.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and forensic anthropologists from Washburn University in Topeka assisted the sheriff’s office on Tuesday.
