OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A display of patriotism and unity among law enforcement Sunday night left a community awestruck.

The procession and vigil, entitled "Salute to Blue," recognized the sacrifice Overland Park Officer Mike Mosher made on his way to work last Sunday while attempting to stop a hit-and-run driver. Mosher died in a shootout with the suspect.

In the week since, those who live in the area of West 123rd and Mackey streets have turned the scene of tragedy into a tribute for Mosher.

Sheila Rodriguez is one of the dozens of volunteers who tied ribbons and lit their homes for the decorated officer.

"123rd is commonly driven up and down by officers as they go to their shift or as they're finishing their shift,” Rodriguez said. “And so, as neighbors walk up and down the street, you know, we're all waving at them and we thank them so much for their sacrifices and, and what they do to keep us safe."

Hundreds of members of the public lined the procession route for Mosher, who devoted his life to protect and serve them.

"He's not forgotten,” Rodriguez said, “and that we do care and that we're all just we're very sorry that it happened.”

At the end of the procession, Overland Park's Police Chief Frank Donchez addressed law enforcement gathered at the Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead, named after the last Overland Park officer who died in the line of duty.

A drive-through visitation for Mosher is set for Tuesday at the Overland Park Convention Center. The visitation will be open to law enforcement at 3 p.m. Public visitation will be from 4-6 p.m.
