Independence announces plans for fallen firefighter's visitation, funeral

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There will be a drive-thru visitation Sunday for Independence Firefighter David Jameson Jr., who died last week at the scene of an illegal backyard burn.

The city of Independence announced plans Wednesday for a public visitation and procession and a private funeral service for Jameson, a 23-year veteran with the department and father of 10 who collapsed and died May 7 after experiencing shortness of breath on the service call.

The visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Cable Dahmer Arena, 19100 E. Valley View Parkway. It’s the venue formerly known as Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.

The public will not be allowed to exit their vehicles at the visitation, which will begin at the east entrance into the area off of East Valley View Parkway.

The public safety procession also will take place in the Cable Dahmer Arena parking lot.

A private funeral service will take place Monday followed by a procession led by the the Independence Fire and Police departments at approximately 2 p.m.

It will begin at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St. South and pass Jameson’s former station, Independence Fire Station No. 5, 11301 E. 35th St.

IAFF Local 781 Good and Welfare has established the David F. Jameson Memorial Fund to benefit his family. Contributions are accepted via check made payable to Independence Firefighters Local 78 and mailed to IAFF Local 781 Professional Firefighters of Independence, 320 E. Pacific Ave, Independence MO 64050.
