Independence man killed in hit & run; police need help

Posted

A Kansas City family is asking for help after a loved one was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Independence.

The accident happened on US 40 Highway near S. River Boulevard just before 9 p.m. Friday.

Margaret Winters received a phone call from Independence police early Saturday morning telling her that her son had been killed.

"He was a beautiful young man; everyone who met him loved him. He was sweet," said Winters.

Winters said her son, 38-year-old Derrick Hubbard, was hit and killed while walking home from work.

The Kansas City native is a husband and a father of four.

Independence police have released surveillance video that shows the car they believe hit him.

Octavia Standley is Hubbard's older sister. Her family wants justice.

"If there's a bit of humanity in there, if there's a bit of sorrow, we're asking you to turn yourself in. We as a family don't want vengeance, but what we do want is justice," said Standley.

If you have information regarding this collision, please contact the Independence Police Department at (816) 325-7300 or call the TIPS Hotline (816) 474-TIPS or IPD tips at (816) 325-7777 or email leads@indepmo.org
