KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police are piecing together the timeline of what led up to a shooting Tuesday on an Independence cul-de-sac that residents described as quiet.
"We were just sitting watch[ing] TV, and we heard a bang. Next we hear, ‘Bang! Bang! Bang!’ We came up here, and there’s a guy running off the street," Lloyd Turpin, who heard gunfire, told 41 Action News.
Police had responded to a shots fired call around 5 p.m. Tuesday at East 25th Terrace and South Westport Road. Upon arrival, officers located one man, who had been shot, in a car and one man near the vehicle. The second victim was suffering from injuries that did not result from being shot, according to police.
Exclusive video that 41 Action News obtained showed the moments after gunfire ripped through the neighborhood.
"I heard a popping noise and thought it was a car backfiring,” said Shandar Gillespie, who called 911, “and then I heard the second noise and then the third pop. And I looked out my window and observed a black male running through my neighbor’s yard and my yard."
Dozens of officers responded to the area near South Westport Road.
"They were quick to respond, quick to track down people,” Gillespie said. “They got K-9 out here they searched the yards.”
Two people are in custody, and police believe the man who was shot might have committed a crime before this all took place, according to Independence Police Officer Jodi Grooms.
"They were at a residence down the street then they left,” Grooms said. “That’s when the shooting occurred.”
Security footage 41 Action News obtained showed a man wearing latex gloves running from the scene.
"It was a quiet night home, and then all of a sudden there’s police everywhere," Gillespie said.
Police still are working to track down a third person who left the scene – they're not sure if the individual is a victim or a suspect.
