Jackson County deputy shoots, kills suspect wanted on warrants, police say

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Jackson County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a suspect wanted on several felony warrants Thursday night in Independence, authorities said.

The incident happened around 6:50 p.m. near South Hawthorne Avenue and East 25th Street South in Independence.

Independence officers were there to help deputies arrest the man, police spokesman Officer John Syme said.

A second person who was with the suspect was also struck by gunfire from a sheriff's deputy, Syme said. That person was transported to an area hospital. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

No officers or deputies were injured in the incident.

The Independence Police Department's Criminal Investigations Unit was investigating the shooting.
