Independence protesters hold moment of silence at Harry S. Truman Courthouse

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — More than 300 people gathered on Sunday in Independence to protest the death of George Floyd.

Protesters gathered around 1 p.m. at the UN Peace Plaza to march to the Harry S. Truman Courthouse, where attendees kneeled in silence for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

The moment of silence was the length of time that Floyd, who died in police custody, was on the ground with a knee on his neck during his arrest. Derek Chauvin, the officer who kneeled on Floyd, has since been fired from the Minneapolis Police Department and charged with second-degree murder, an upgrade from the initial third-degree murder charge.

Speakers included Darron Story, Jenny Jackson and Zac McLaughlin.

Community of Christ church leaders organized the event.
