An Independence woman faces a felony child endangerment charge in connection with the burning of a 4-month-old child she was babysitting Saturday, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.
Brea C. White, 23, called the child's guardian Saturday afternoon and said the child was no longer breathing. White had been caring for the infant since 6 a.m. that morning.
A physician at Children's Mercy Hospital later told the police that the child had "dipping burns" — burns from being submerged in a too-hot liquid — over 60 percent of its body; the same physician also said that the child may have been shaken.
White said she had been giving the infant a bath, but she had checked the temperature first.
