KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A police investigation is underway after a crash early Friday afternoon along Interstate 435.

Kansas City, Missouri, police vehicles could be seen on Kansas City Scout cameras blocking the southbound lanes of the interstate at Front Street.

As of 2 p.m., traffic was backed up north of the Missouri River. But by 3:30 p.m., the area had fully reopened.

North Kansas City police said the crash originated as a chase.

Just before 1:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the parking lot of 2214 Taney on reports of shots fired from a blue van.

With cameras on the suspect, officers approached the van, but it took off and attempted to head east on 210 Highway toward I-435.

During the pursuit, the van stopped and ran into a police vehicle. An ambulance checked on the officer and that person was alright.

While the damage caused fluid leakage to the van, it took off again heading southbound on I-435.

As the chase ensued, the van passed KCPD personnel, which prompted them to assist in the chase.

Police said the van continued until it was so disabled it was forced to stop, and the occupant fled on foot.

The driver of the van is in custody.
