The Jackson County inmate accused of raping a fellow inmate is awaiting trial for murder.

The 41 Action News investigators learned Wednesday that Dontae Jefferson was sent to jail in 2014 in the shooting death of Ka'vyea Curry, 38.

According to police, Curry and his 10-year-old son were inside of a parked vehicle at a gas station on 45th and Cleveland when Jefferson fired shots into the car.

While Curry died from his injuries, his son was left paralyzed.

Curry's father-in-law, Forest Tyson Jr., told 41 Action News he's not surprised about the most recent allegations against Jefferson.

"It's been over two years and we still haven't gone to trial," Tyson Jr. said. "What if he was brought to trial sooner? I'm sure that this wouldn't have happened."

The 41 Action News investigators also found Jefferson has a lengthy criminal history that includes armed robbery and stealing.

A spokesperson with Jackson County said, in regards to this latest incident, the guard who left their keys unattended has been suspended without pay.
