OLATHE, Kan. – A Johnson County judge has ordered an evaluation for the man charged with child endangerment and abandonment of a corpse in two different counties.
Justin Rey is accused of dismembering his wife’s body in front of their two children in a Kansas City, Missouri hotel room. He claims Jessica Monteiro Rey died in childbirth.
A few days later, Rey was discovered living in a Lenexa, Kansas, storage unit with the toddler and newborn, and his wife’s remains in two coolers.
He’s charged with child endangerment in Johnson County, and abandonment of a corpse in Jackson County.
Thursday, the Johnson County judge accepted a recommendation by Johnson County Mental Health that Rey is incompetent to stand trial.
This came after Rey’s attorney, Courtney Henderson, said Rey was unable to understand the charges brought against him.
The judge ordered him to be transferred to Larned State Hospital for 90 days for further evaluation and treatment.
Parties will return to court on March 8 to receive an updated evaluation from Larned hospital staff.
