Judge hears arguments for putting minimum wage hike on Kansas City's April ballot

There is new life in the fight to get the minimum wage increase question on the April ballot in Kansas City, Missouri.

On Wednesday, a District Court judge heard arguments from an attorney representing Kansas City and attorneys representing the Southern Christian leadership conference. The SCLC is leading the legal battle to force Kansas City to let voters decide in April if the minimum wage should be increased in Kansas City to $15 per hour.

The Missouri Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that Kansas City should put the question on the ballot and let voters decide. But the City Council took action to get the measure on the August ballot instead of the April ballot. The attorney for the city argued that there was not enough time to follow city regulations and still get the question on the ballot in April.

The April ballots in Kansas City are not being printed because of a court order until the matter is resolved.
The district judge is expected to rule this week or early next week.
