KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 15-year-old Independence girl suffered critical injuries after being struck by a truck while riding her bike Saturday night.

According to Independence police, the girl was riding her bike across U.S. 24 at Noland Road shortly after midnight, when she was hit by the truck. Police on Monday said the driver of the vehicle saw the girl as she rode into the eastbound lanes of traffic but was not able to avoid striking her.

On Monday, the girl remained in critical condition, according to police.

The driver and passenger of the pickup were not hurt. Police said the driver had a green traffic light and the right-of-way.

Witnesses on scene told police that the bicyclist was crossing the intersection while she had a red traffic light.

The victim's name is not being released at this time.
