TOPEKA, Kan. — As the Sunflower State creeps closer to Election Day, campaigns in the state’s second congressional district is turning up the heat.
U.S House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy made multiple stops throughout the state Tuesday, stumping for GOP candidates in tougher-than-expected races.
“There is no greater contrast than this congressional race right here,” McCarthy said of the race between State Secretary Jake LaTurner and Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla.
McCarthy said he hopes voters will look at the both candidates' records and who is "best prepared."
McCarthy’s trip just three weeks out from Election Day signals to some the race could be tighter than previously expected.
“In your typical election, this is not a district that [a] Republican should have to worry about,” said Patrick Miller, a political science professor at the University of Kansas.
De La Isla said on Tuesday that November's election "carries a lot of weight."
“We're in the middle of a pandemic. And we are in the middle of a health crisis," she said. "I think that it's going to be very clear in the voting with regards to what Kansans are looking for."
Mail-in ballots will begin being distributed Wednesday in Kansas.
