KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Whether you spell it "donuts" or "doughnuts," they taste the same. And the country will celebrate the fried dough balls Friday during National Doughnut Day.
Kansas City is home to several local and national bakeries specializing in the sugary treat.
Here are some deals you can find around town to feed your craving (or earn brownie points at work) on June 7, 2019.
- Lamar's (multiple locations): Get one free, circular doughnut with a hole. No purchase necessary. Lamar's is collecting donations for the Salvation Army. One dozen glazed doughnuts cost $14.32, including tax.
- Donut King (2320 Armour Road, North Kansas City, Missouri): Get one free doughnut per purchase. One dozen glazed doughnuts cost $12.32, including tax.
- Donutology (1009 Westport Road, Kansas City, Missouri): Get a free glazed doughnut flavored Polly Pop with purchase, buy three gluten-free doughnuts get one free, receive 10 percent off your bill if you wear a Charlie Hustle brand t-shirt. The bakery is also collecting donations for the Salvation Army. One dozen glazed doughnuts cost $11.99.
- Pike's Place (1914 NE 72nd Street, Kansas City, Missouri): Get one free glazed doughnut with purchase. One dozen glazed doughnuts cost $10.85, including tax.
- Hurts Donut (8809 State Line Road, Kansas City, Missouri): Special varieties of doughnuts available Friday only. Hurts will donate 10 percent of all proceeds Friday to the Veterans Community Project. Representatives from the VCP will be at Hurts from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a tiny home on display. One dozen glazed doughnuts cost $10.96, including tax.
- Duck Donuts (3630 W 95th Street, Leawood, Kansas): Get one free plain cake, cinnamon sugar, or powder doughnut. No purchase necessary. One dozen glazed doughnuts cost $16.64.
- Doughboys Donuts (11559 East 63rd Street, Raytown, Missouri): Buy five doughnuts, get the sixth free. One dozen glazed doughnuts cost $10.
- Krispy Kreme (8805 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Merriam, Kansas): Get one free doughnut of your choice. No purchase necessary. One dozen glazed doughnuts cost $10.28, including tax.
- Dunkin' (multiple locations): Get one free, classic doughnut with the purchase of a beverage. One dozen glazed doughnuts cost $10.84, including tax.
- Hy-Vee: Buy one dozen glazed doughnuts for $5. Hy-Vee stores will be frying fresh doughnuts from 4-7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Come get samples while supplies last.
The Salvation Army established National Doughnut Day in 1938. The day got its name after "Doughnut Lassies" delivered doughnuts to soldiers in World War I. The Salvation Army continues the tradition of delivering doughnuts on this day as part of its mission to do the most good.
