A close knit family is torn apart after a father of six was shot and later died the day before Thanksgiving.
Trina Dodson never thought she'd spent this holiday weekend planning the funeral for her brother, 49-year-old Arthur Mourning Jr.
"My brother didn't do anything to anyone so I don't see why someone would do this to him," she said. "It's just heartless."
On Wednesday evening, the suspects knocked on Mourning's door at 49th and Bellefontaine in Kansas City, Missouri.
"He went downstairs to open the door, the person said give him money and my brother said he didn't have any money they shot my brother and went through his pockets and left him for dead," Dodson said.
Mourning later died at the hospital.
He is survived by six children and five brothers and sisters who called him "Lee Lee"
Dodson wants something done about gun violence in Kansas City.
According to statistics from the Kansas City Police Department, a firearm has been used in at least 98 homicides this year.
"My brother was the 110th homicide victim there are 109 other families going through what we're going through and that's not to say that number won't change before you guys air this tonight it's sad and it's senseless," Dodson said.
The family seeks justice in their path toward closure.
"We want them to turn themselves in so we can try to go on with our lives because they took something very valuable to us and we just want them to turn themselves in," Dodson said.
She also needs people to speak up.
Officers are asking residents who live in the area of 49th and Bellefontaine and noticed anything unusual Wednesday around 6 p.m., call police or the KC Crimestoppers hotline 816-474-TIPS (8477).
Funeral services are set for December 3 at the Good Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to noon, the funeral starts at noon.
