KANSAS CITY, Mo. — People will soon be able to do pull-ups, practice yoga and perform other fitness activities in a designated outdoor space at Harris Park in Kansas City, Missouri.

This week, crews began grading and leveling part of the park at east 40th Street and Wayne Avenue in order to install artificial turf.

Pull-up bars are already in place. Chris Harris, founder of the park, plans to add more body weight-based fitness equipment.

“My dream is to put it there and they’ll come,” Harris said. “Continuing to bring the community together and having them something to do, that’s just one of the dreams I have.”

Harris has spent years building the Harris Park Midtown Sports & Activities Center. The center now takes up an entire city block. It includes a pitch and putt golf course, a miniature golf course, a playground, a basketball court and now this workout facility.

“We just want to continue cleaning up the health and the mindset of our community and giving them things to do,” Harris explained his motivation.

Viridity, a golf course construction company based in Parkville, Missouri, which helped build half of the golf course at Harris Park is helping build the workout space for free. Harris said community partnerships like that make his dream a reality and ultimately the community benefits the most.
