The Kansas City Missouri Police Department is giving away free gunlocks.
After a recent tragedy involving a child, Capt. Ryan Mills decided more light needed to be shed on the program.
“This is a program we’ve had for a while but it hasn’t been advertised very well for some time. Last week, there was a terrible tragedy in our city and it really got me thinking about what we can do to prevent a future tragedy from happening,” he said.
Free locks are available at the East Patrol Division on 2640 Prospect. Anyone wanting a lock can stop by and pick one up.
“There are a number of homes with firearms in them and there are a number of young children in those homes. Young children are very inquisitive by nature, and firearms are typically very easy to use and have irrevocable and drastic potential outcomes when they are used,” Mills said.
Mills said the station will have the locks as long as possible. If they run out, they will get more.
The locks are provided to the station for free by Protect Child Safe.
