KC and WWI Museum working to fix hillside slip

Kansas City officials are investigating a slip on the hillside at the Liberty Memorial.

Recent heavy rains have caused dirt, rocks and other debris to slide down, breaking up rock along part of the retaining wall and blocking part of the sidewalk along Main Street.

President and CEO of the WWI Museum Matthew Naylor told 41 Action News, "The city has conducted an engineering report. It's a large area of the hill, and so we're studying, they're studying, what's happened."

The Parks and Recreation department is overseeing the process. For now, the slip is not considered dangerous to people passing by.

"I think that the engineer's report showed that just with appropriate cleanup that it's OK," Naylor said. "Within a couple of days the city comes, cleans it up, as we work toward a more permanent fix."

A long-term, sustainable solution is being considered. The next meeting for the Buildings and Grounds Committee at the WWI Museum is Feb. 11. The hillside slip is one of the items on the agenda.
