KCPD warns of speeding ticket scam

The Kansas City Police Department is warning that some people have received notifications about speeding tickets that they believe are part of a scam.

According to a release from the department, some citizens are receiving email notifications that KCPD has issued them a speeding ticket via a red light camera. Police said they believe it is a malware scam that targets drivers whose GPS data is leaking.

The release says KCPD no longer issues tickets via red light camera. The Kansas City Municipal Court doesn’t send official court notices by email regarding tickets or court dates. The municipal court only corresponds by email when a citizen first contacts the court by email, according to the release.

Police said they suspect data is coming from an app with permission to track phone GPS data. The email contains accurate speeding data, targeting drivers whose GPS data is leaked to the scammers by “shady apps,” according to police.
