Kansas City police are investigating after a man was shot in the 3700 block of 56th Street.

After 11 p.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to the area on a report of an outside disturbance. En route, the call was upgraded to a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound on the front porch of a residence. KCFD personnel responded and declared him deceased at the scene.

The female homeowner told police she heard loud banging and knocking on her front door, and she could not see who it was. Fearing for her safety, she retrieved her firearm. The woman said the man kicked her door open and she fired her weapon, striking him.

Kansas City police say the man and woman knew each other. Police said the man was at the home earlier and was asked to leave by the woman because he had drugs with him. He returned and banged on her door and kicked it down. The woman said she feared for her life and shot him.

Police are asking for anyone with information on the shooting to call 816-474-TIPS.
