"The wintry weather will likely begin as snow Tuesday morning, changing to sleet and freezing rain before coming to an end around noon Tuesday," he said.
A quick dusting up to an inch is possible near and east of I-35.
Peery said the highest snowfall totals look to be west of I-35 with 2 to 4 inches possible, and the highest ice totals east of the interstate.
The weather service said drivers should prepare for slippery road conditions during the morning and evening commute.
Warming temperatures Tuesday evening should melt any accumulation in metro Kansas City before a round of rain comes through Tuesday night.
Another change over to wintry weather is possible Wednesday morning through afternoon.
Counties under the advisory in Kansas include Johnson, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Atchison, Miami and Doniphan.
In Missouri, Jackson, Platte, Clay, Cass, Clinton and Buchanan counties are in the advisory area.
Peery said another winter system could move in Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing the threat of accumulating snow.
