WATCH: Kansas City upgrading park playgrounds

Mornings on the playground at Kansas City's Roanoke Park are about to get a little more exciting for Joan Riffel and her granddaughter when park's new state-of-the art playground officially opens this Saturday.

"I've never seen anything like it," Riffel said of the new park.

With ropes everywhere, tall mounds covered in artificial turf and even a zip-line, the nature-themed playground takes Roanoke Park to a new level.

"It's really unique. A lot of people love going there.  It's definitely new in Kansas City," said KC Parks and Recreation senior landscape architect Erica Flad.

Part of the playground is already open, including the zip-line, while the rest still under construction.

The city decided to build the $382,000 playground after neighbors fought for it.

"I believe this neighborhood has a lot of new families moving and we want to try to keep those kinds of residents here in the city by having new exciting playgrounds and parks," said Flad.

A grand opening ribbon-cutting at the playground in Roanoke Park is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.

A similar playground is also going up in KC's Kessler Park.
