KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Zoo said they are mourning the loss of a second animal in one week.
Friday morning, zoo officials said in a statement one of its adult giraffes, Hamisi, died in an accident early Wednesday morning.
Zoo veterinarians said Hamisi likely died instantly after suffering an acute spiral cord injury in his behind-the-scenes bedroom.
Hamisi came to the Kansas City Zoo in 2016 from Disney’s Animal Kingdom. His two calves, Dixie and Maxwell, were born last year.
The zoo said it is conducting an internal review of the giraffe habitat, built in 1995, in an effort to prevent an accident such as this from happening again.
Crews will make modifications as needed, and inform other facilities of their findings, the zoo said.
In the meantime, the zoo said staff are taking steps to make sure the rest of the herd is safe.
Earlier this week, Bam Bam the polar bear was euthanized after tests revealed she had untreatable liver cancer.
