KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Animal Control officers are now investigating an attempted dog poisoning in Waldo after a homeowner discovered a raw hamburger patty stuffed with pellets in the middle of her yard.

On Monday afternoon Shannon Broderick went to let her dog, Bear, run outside when she discovered something in the middle of the yard— a raw hamburger patty stuffed with what looks like rat poison pellets inside.

"As soon as I picked it up and looked at it, there’s just this little bell that goes off and you’re like something is wrong," said Broderick. "It wasn’t one or two, it was a handful that had been stuffed in there."

Broderick picked up the meat before her dog could get to it and called the non-emergency police phone number.

A Kansas City Animal Control officer responded.

The department told 41 Action News they have not received any other complaints but are investigating the incident. Officers collected the meat as evidence.

"I just can’t imagine what it would take to do that and walk away," said Broderick. "I don’t know how you sleep at night."

On Wednesday, investigators went door-to-door, asking neighbors if they had seen anything or knew who left the raw meat.

“This is not a prank. It’s a serious deal, and we want to catch this person so it doesn’t happen again,” said John Baccala, a spokesperson for KC Animal Control.

Broderick said she is happy Animal Control is investigating and hopes they catch the person who planted the meat so Bear and other dogs in Waldo stay safe.
