KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As vials of the COVID-19 vaccine continue to roll out in the United States, including the Kansas City metro, doctors warn of a new virus strain currently detected in the United Kingdom.

"Every time you hear about it mutating again, it sends another wave of fear throughout the population,” Steven Stites, of the University of Kansas Medical System, said.

Viruses mutate "constantly," according to Stites, who said that's how they survive and continue to infect people.

According to local doctors, there have been several mutations of the coronavirus. Scientists are studying how mutations of the virus affect its ability to spread and whether it becomes more deadly.

"Our bodies are built to handle that," Stites said. "And, and I think the vaccine will continue to work."
