KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City-area hospitals are reporting nine fireworks injuries so far this year, including one amputation. Hospital executives hope the injury-list will help people realize that the dangers of fireworks are real and people should take serious precautions to avoid getting hurt.
HCA Midwest Health hospitals in the Kansas City area have treated seven fireworks-related injuries this year. Two of the victims had severe burns and are in the Grossman Burn Center at Research Medical Center. One of the seven victims had to have an amputation. Other victims had eye injuries and minor burns.
The University of Kansas Hospital reported treating two patients in the emergency room with fireworks-related injuries. One was a 17-year-old with burns and the second patient was a 4-year-old boy with a fireworks-related injury. They were treated and released.
All area hospitals leaders confirmed that emergency rooms are preparing for more fireworks injuries, but they are hoping people will learn from the people who are recovering from fireworks injuries and choose a safer way to enjoy the Fourth of July so they can enjoy the holiday and not spend time in the emergency room.
