KANSAS CITY, Mo. — His left side of his jaw is broken. His mouth is currently wired shut and a bullet is still lodged in his clavicle, inches from his heart.
But Antoine Roston’s family tells 41 Action News the father of three is making a miraculous recovery.
“Yes, he’s a fighter. He’s, of course, frustrated but still pushing through,” said Monee, Antoine’s wife.
On Thursday, 41 Action News sat down with Antoine’s wife, his mother and one of his daughters; the same day Antoine’s status changed from critical to stable condition as he was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit.
“These five days have been a long five days,” said Deanna Roston, Antoine’s mom.
While he cannot currently talk, Antoine has been communicating with his family by writing.
According to his mother, he was on his way home early Sunday morning when he answered a Lyft request ride at the Landing Eatery and Pub in Liberty. Police say 28-year-old Patrick Pulse started arguing and fighting with Antoine. The rider then opened fire, hitting Antoine three times.
Police arrested Pulse and charged him with felony assault and armed criminal action. He’s currently being held on a $100,000 bond.
“There is no crude, there is no hate. Sometimes people make bad decisions,” said Monee.
Roston is expected to undergo at least three more surgeries.
A fundraiser is being held Friday night at Homeslice Pizza and Pints from 6 to 9 p.m. to help raise money for his medical bills.
