Kansas City Parks and Recreation crews are completing tasks they ordinarily wouldn't complete this time of year.
"Everybody's out, getting it done. We're definitely trying to push and take advantage of this weather," Louis Cummings with the Parks and Rec Department explains. "Getting some seeding in a little earlier, turf maintenance, bed maintenance for flower beds."
Cummings says the city has roughly 20 crews working across Kansas City.
Getting a head start is always good. "On the flip side, looks like we're going to be mowing grass, maybe a month earlier than expected if we keep this weather up," said Cummings.
The city usually budgets for a certain number of plants, clean up efforts and mows per year. When those numbers go up, Cummings says there could be a trickle down effect to the taxpayer.
Another challenge is what to do if we get another deep freeze. "I'd hate to see it freeze right now because we do have flowers coming up and trees starting to bud out and that would impact them if we had a freeze," Cummings explains.
