UPDATE, 3 p.m. Wednesday | KC Pet Project said that 139 dogs found new homes during its special adoption event Tuesday.

"We were blown away by our community's support," the animal shelter said in a tweet Wednesday. "Thank you Kansas City for rallying when we needed you most and helping us save so many lives!"

PREVIOUS | KC Pet Project is holding a special, somewhat impromptu, adoption event Tuesday.

The animal shelter said in a Facebook post Monday that they had experienced such a great influx of dogs in the last seven days that every kennel is full.

Teresa Johnson, KC Pet Project Executive Director, called it an emergency situation after more than 250 animals were brought in.

"We have at least 400 plus dogs in our care right now," Johnson said.

As a result, KC Pet Project is offering $10 adoptions for dogs on Tuesday.

The shelter said fees would be reduced to $10 for all dogs at all locations — no exceptions — for Tuesday only. The usual adoption screenings still take place.

There are hundreds of dogs of all ages and sizes available for adoption.

The special runs through 6 p.m. at the KC Pet Project main shelter on Raytown Road and 7 p.m. at the adoption centers at Zona Rosa and 95th and Quivira Road.
