KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City, Missouri, City Council on Thursday approved a contract with Kansas City Pet Project for the organization to take over the responsibilities of the city's animal control.

The transition will begin Sept 1 and will go into full effect on Dec 1. KC Pet Project plans to hire at least 15 animal health officers as part of the transition. Current animal health officers with the city will be able to apply for those jobs.

“KCPP has done a great job running the city’s animal shelter and we expect more collaboration as we expand their responsibilities,” KCMO Councilwoman Teresa Loar said in a news release.

Under the new field services contract, KC Pet Project staff will enforce city laws, which includes issuing citations, impounding stray dogs, obtaining warrants in bite incidents, and investigating animal cruelty cases with the assistance of the Kansas City police and fire departments.

The signed contract pays KC Pet Project $1,016,518 through the 2021 fiscal year.

After that, there will three more one-year contract renewals.

To reach KC Pet Project staff, residents should still call the city 311 number.
