KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Left turn lanes, medians, bike lanes and designated street-side parking could all be coming to Meyer Boulevard in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri.

Thursday, planners and consultants with the city will reveal proposals to change the east-west street between Ward Parkway and Troost Avenue. A presentation will take place at 6:15 p.m. at St. Peter's Parish at 701 E. Meyer Blvd. The public is welcome to view the plan and visit with designers from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A police report shows a SUV hit a woman who was in a crosswalk crossing Meyer Boulevard at Wyandotte Street during the Brookside Art Fair in May. John Middleton lives three doors down from the intersection and has pushed for the city to do traffic studies, put up signs, or install a traffic signal at the intersection for years.

"It was a pretty gruesome situation and it just made my heart sink because as much as I've advocated for a safer crossing there, to see someone actually get hit in that crosswalk, knowing all the efforts I've put into it — it really, really bothered me," Middleton said.

An early look at the proposal the city will reveal Thursday evening does not include a pedestrian signal at Wyandotte Street. The concept calls for a road diet, basically slimming Meyer Blvd from two lanes each way to one lane each direction, then adding a turn lane in the middle and bike lanes on the side.
