KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new $75 million aquarium is planned for the Kansas City Zoo, a spokesman confirmed Wednesday to 41 Action News.
The Kansas City, Missouri, Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners gave approval Tuesday for the Friends of the Zoo to begin construction on the new exhibit in “early 2021.”
The aquarium is expected to be completed in June 2023, according to an Intra-Departmental Communication from KC Parks Director Teresa Rynard recommending approval of the project.
When completed, the Kansas City Zoo Aquarium will be approximately 60,000 square feet/600,000 gallons of water and include up to 35 exhibits.
The largest exhibit is expected to be around 350,000 gallons and the aquarium “will include marine animals from around the world.”
An aquarium complex that size would be among the 10 largest in the United States.
