KCAI Art and Design Auction raises money for students, school

Posted

What is art?

Now there’s a conversation starter, but on Saturday, June 3 at 6 p.m., it will also be a “bid” starter!

That’s when the bidding cards go up and the auctioneer’s hammer comes down at the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) Art and Design Auction.

The Art Institute is a nationally renowned resource for all things artistic: from the wall to the movie screen to the 3-D printer. It is all being done here.

In fact, even early on Wednesday morning, a 3-D printer was buzzing away, creating a vase that will be auctioned off Saturday night.

Distinguished alumni, faculty and friends of the school donate the artwork.

It all comes back, in financial and inspirational terms, to the students through scholarships, new programs, the latest technology and holding on to the illustrious teachers who pass on their knowledge to the artists of tomorrow.

Where else will you find edible crackers with a laser design, or a portrait of Alec Baldwin with a bluebird on his shoulder, or sculptures and landscapes by local Kansas City creators?

This Saturday night, at the KCAI, the answer to that first question, “What is art?” will be easy: It’s everything!
