KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Four people safely escaped a home as fire took over the three-story house early Wednesday morning, according to the Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to 116 Jackson Ave. in the city’s historic northeast neighborhood at 1:50 a.m. A chief with the department said the house is a total loss.

The chief said remodelers split the house into apartments. The added walls separating the units made it difficult for firefighters to fight the fire from inside the building, he explained.

As a result, firefighters took a defensive approach, spraying water on the building from the outside.

The fire department did not share details on what started the fire. An investigator left the scene before 6 a.m.

The American Red Cross assisted the four people living at the home.
