KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Kansas, man who was arrested after allegedly throwing items at police officers during protests on the Country Club Plaza was charged in federal court Thursday with illegally possessing a firearm.

Matthew Madden, 22, was charged in a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Missouri, with one count of being a drug user in possession of a firearm, according to U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri Tim Garrison.

The complaint alleges that Madden, a “habitual user of, or addicted to, marijuana,” possessed a semi-automatic handgun while at protests Tuesday on the Plaza, according to a news release from Garrison’s office.

According to an affidavit, Madden was seen throwing water bottles Tuesday at police officers who were providing security near 47th Street and J.C. Nichols Parkway.

Later that evening, officers saw Madden throwing water bottles from the southwest corner of Mill Creek Park, according to the affidavit.

Madden allegedly ran when officers approached him, but he was taken into custody on the east side of the park. Officers recovered a fanny pack from Madden with a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun, which was loaded, as well as another magazine and 1.23 grams of marijuana, according to the affidavit.
