KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City, Missouri, Councilwoman Katheryn Shields said she did not want to put her name on a letter from the council to KCPD thanking the department for its recent service.
The letter makes references to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as protests against police brutality.
Shields told 41 Action News she did not give her permission to have her name on the letter.
After hours of listening to protesters’ stories of how they were treated by KCPD officers, Shields said she felt the letter was “very inconsistent.”
“It’s not the time to send a congratulatory letter to police,” Shields said. “Those (congratulatory letters) come when the work is done.”
Shields, who represents the city's fourth district, was behind an ordinance that nullified some charges filed against protesters.
Councilman Brandon Ellington plans to introduce an even broader ordinance to be discussed next week.
