KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas proposed several changes to the city’s fiscal year 2020-21 budget.
In a memo sent to the city council on Friday, Lucas outlined the following proposed amendments:
- $75,000 from the Health Levy “for youth violence prevention to the Teens in Transition program.” The program aims to reduce violence among youth.
- $200,000 from the Visit KC appropriation to the KC Film Commission.
- $400,000 from the Health Levy to Children’s Mercy Kansas City, with taxpayer funds to be put toward mental health, as well as suicide and violence prevention.
- $50,000 from the mayor’s office “for youth violence prevention to the Hire KC Youth program.” Hire KC Youth would then be eligible for additional “performance-based” funding.
- $25,000 from KC BizCare for KC SourceLink.
He also “acknowledged,” according to the memo, that more funding would support the following initiatives: Affordable housing, public safety, mental health programming, street maintenance, transit access and neighborhood and community building.
In a tweet Friday afternoon, Lucas said that he is “confident these changes advance our shared goal of adopting the most equitable budget in KC history while maintaining our proposed balanced budget.”
