KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City, Missouri, City Council approved a $250,000 settlement for lawsuit filed by a member of the Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Stephen Seals sued in federal court in 2019 alleging white colleagues were chosen over him for promotions.

According to the lawsuit, Seals claimed, "he has been discriminated against because of his race, color, and age, was subjected to a hostile work environment, and was retaliated against after making claims of discrimination."

In one case, former Chief Gary Reese promoted another white firefighter without notifying anyone else about the open position.

Seals' attorney said he will continue fighting for his career and continue to try to make the department a better place to work.
