KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony returns for the holiday season

Watch the annual KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony online or on air, Thanksgiving night at 6 p.m. 
 
 
 
The Annual KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony returns for its 87th year. Families come to the Country Club Plaza to celebrate the holiday season. Honorary guest and Olympian Jack Sock will help "Flip the Switch."
 
This is the 17th year that KCP&L has presented this time-honored Kansas City tradition.
 
41 Action News Chief Meteorologist Gary Lezak will serve as emcee with anchors Rhiannon Ally and Mike Marusarz.
 
The ceremony takes place on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 24, from 6-7 p.m. on the Country Club Plaza. Live coverage starts at 4:00 p.m. on 41 Action News.
 
Sock brought home a gold and a bronze medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics. He is one of the top-ranked American tennis players in both singles and doubles on the ATP World Tour and is currently ranked 24th in the world.
 
There will be a KCP&L pre-show featuring Kansas City A Capella, Blue Valley High School Chamber Singers and KC Ballet's Second Company, Brad Cunningham Band and The Elders.
 
The lighting program begins at 6 p.m., with the flip of the switch at 6:54 p.m.
 
Firework displays will take place immediately after the Flip of the Switch: Near the stage at Nichols and Pennsylvania (above Burberry) one block east of the stage at Nichols and Broadway (across from Helzberg); and atop the InterContinental Hotel.
 
The ceremony main stage be located on Nichols Road and Pennsylvania, near Brio Tuscan Grille and Burberry.
 
Best views of the ceremony stage: Nichols and Pennsylvania intersection, and along Nichols Road between Pennsylvania and Broadway.
 
Several nearby garages will provide free parking close to the stage.
 
The KCP&L Plaza Lights shine daily from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m through Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017.
 
All Plaza parking garages will be open and accessible throughout the KCP&L Plaza Lights season.
 
Road closures:

Starting Wednesday at 5 p.m., Nichols will be closed from Jefferson to Broadway.

Pennsylvania will be closed from the alley way south of Panera to the alley north of O'Dowd's.

All access to garages will be open on Wednesday.

Starting Thursday morning, Broadway will be closed from 47th Street to Ward Parkway. Nichols Road will additionally be closed from Broadway to Central.
