KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With one month left until Election Day, Get Out the Vote groups in Kansas and Missouri are working to register as many people as possible to vote.
"We really want everyone to exercise their right to vote, it’s very important," said Laura Marcus Mountjoy, membership chair for the League of Women Voters of Kansas City, Jackson, Clay Platte Counties.
The chapter held a pop-up event Saturday at City Market in Kansas City, Missouri, during the farmers market to register voters and provide free notary services for mail-in ballots.
"We are non-partisan," Marcus Mountjoy said. "We do not talk to you about candidates at all, we just want you to exercise your right to vote."
This push led to several people signing up, including Kansas City, Missouri, resident Justin Love.
"My wife and I just moved and it’s real simple takes like 30 seconds," Love said.
Jeremy Ridge, another KCMO resident, also registered and said he believes it's "very important" on all the issues.
In Kansas City, Kansas, members of the Pleasant Green Baptist Church also are helping residents register to vote.
"I want to be a change agent," organizer Judy Coffey said. "I want to be out here to let people know the importance of voting."
She said she hopes by holding the event, more people will register for the upcoming election.
"It is so very critical that every person votes, register to vote, vote because it’s so important in the environment we are living in," Coffey said, "because your vote is your voice."
A voice in what the future of this country looks like.
"That’s a privilege not everyone in the world gets to have," Love said, "and as a 26-year-old to know that my voice matters to our government, that’s a big deal."
The pop-up event in the City Market will continue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until the election, providing free notary services and other non-registration services and information.
Voter registration deadlines are Oct. 7 in Missouri and Oct. 13 in Kansas.
