KUAW Internet radio station teaches youth

Posted

Internet radio station KUAW is the new kid on the block in Kansas City.  It's housed in the W.E.B. DuBois Learning Center in Kansas City's urban core.  Lewis Walker, founder of Black Family Technology Awareness Association of Kansas City, started the station to give people a voice in the community.

"KUAW stands for Knowledge, Understanding and Wisdom," explained Walker.  "We wanted our name to reflect our mission," he added.

Neighborhood organizations, faith groups, businesses and nonprofits are welcome to come on the air and share their information and insights to empower the community. Young people are also encouraged to come and learn how to run the station and produce a program on the air.

"We are training our youth to know how to set up stories, produce a program, understand how the electronics and streaming works and they can use those skills later in life in the business world," Walker said.

Elementary-age children have a program talking about school and toys. High school students have the Teen Scene program, where they discuss things like dating and school safety.

Right now the station is only online, but they do want to buy a low-powered tower so people in Kansas City's urban core who do not have Internet access can tune in. They're trying to raise $1,000. Click here for a link to their crowd-funding campaign or call 816-599-6893.
