KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The trial for Kylr Yust, the man accused of killing two Cass County women in separate incidents a decade apart, has been delayed, according to court records.
The trial, which had been scheduled to begin Nov. 4, was continued Tuesday due to discovery issues.
Yust will be in court for another hearing Sept. 30 in Cass County Circuit Court.
The decision to push back the trial comes one day after new evidence was submitted in the case.
Prosecutors gave Yust’s attorneys 43 disks worth of material Monday, including finalized Belton Police Department and FBI reports.
Yust’s defense lawyers questioned if the Nov. 4 trial date would be possible due to the new evidence.
Earlier this month, a judge ordered a mental health evaluation for Yust to determine whether he is competent to stand trial for the deaths of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions. The evaluation has not yet been completed, his attorneys said Monday.
Yust, 31, is charged with two counts each of first-degree murder and abandonment of a corpse in the women’s deaths.
Kopetsky was 17 when she went missing in 2007. Runions was 21 when she disappeared in 2016. Their remains were found near each other in rural Cass County in 2017.
