Dozens of volunteers were at the KCPS Board of Education building on Thursday, stuffing backpacks with school supplies.

District leaders plan on handing them out during Summerfest. Due to the weather forecast, the event will be August 5, 2017, from 8 a.m. to noon next to the BOE Building at 29th and Troost in KCMO. It was originally scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Raya Turner is a 3rd-grader, and the 8-year-old was among the volunteers working to stuff backpacks.

“I like volunteering because it’s fun, and I’m supposed to be helping other people, and I have a lot of things myself,” Raya said.

The district has teamed up with several sponsors to make this event happen. McDonalds Corp. is providing 6,000 backpacks. Truman Medical Centers is also a sponsor. The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) is providing transportation from several of the district schools to the event.

41 Action News even provided a few school supplies for the event.

Superintendent Mark Bedell said these partnerships are important.

“It’s bigger than just backpacks. We serve 92 percent free and reduced lunches,” Bedell said.
