KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas based financial planning company Waddell and Reed is one Kansas City City Council vote away from moving its headquarters from Overland Park, Kansas, to downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
Leaked images of the location at West 14th Street and Baltimore Avenue caused concern Monday about the intended use of the building, days away from that expected vote.
The images suggested the first 10 floors would be dedicated to parking, upsetting some who said that revenue bonds that would be part of the move should not be used for parking.
41 Action News reached out to Waddell and Reed for clarity on the matter, and a spokesperson provided the following statement:
We remain excited about the possibility of bringing our workforce of approximately 1,000 employees to a distinctive new building inside an enhanced enterprise zone in downtown Kansas City. We're eager to share more details once we have a fully executed and signed lease agreement.
When asked if the development would be built with the first 10 floors meant for parking, Hoadley said final plans have not been made.
The company said it is aware of the images circulating online and stressed that it is still in the early stages of the process.
Representatives from Mayor Quinton Lucas' office confirmed the city council will vote on Thursday, Dec. 12, on leasing the property.
Some people 41 Action News spoke with said while this is an important project expected to bring jobs to the downtown area, but also said it does little to advance the walkability and livability of the downtown area.
